When we come to their graves to pay homage to those who are gone, we all wish to come to a respectful place.
Longing and love accompanying us all the time, and we all wish to preserve our oved ones’ dignified memories. A pivotal part of preserving memory is caring for their place of final rest. The grave, headstone, and immediate environment should be meticulously cleaned and pleasant looking.
When we come to the grave to be with those gone from us, we all wish to come to a decent and respectable place. Some of us come on anniversaries, memorial services and ceremonies, others visit the grave more often – but we all wish to commemorate our loved ones and be with them in a clean and appropriate environment.
This need is shared by all of human kind, but in Judaism it is particularly set forth by the Halacha. There is a reason why Halacha speaks of “Dignity of the Deceased” and the burial Halacha adds significant meaning to this dignity. There is a reason why the burial and memorial service Halacha is well-known even to less-observant Jews, and why Jewish cemeteries are known as sacred places.
Unfortunately, not everyone can care for the graves and headstones by regularly maintaining them. Thus, many of us come to visit the grave and are dismayed by the look of the grave and headstone, in addition to our sense of loss and longing.
